USDA to Begin Furlough of Meat Inspectors One Day a Week From Mid-July-Sept

None of the days would come consecutively. Hagen said the nationwide same-day furloughs were designed to treat all regions of the country equally. USDA rejected rolling furloughs as unfair. Hagen warned lawmakers to expect “enormous economic disruption” in the meat industry, if the inspector furloughs take place. Importers also will feel the effect of furloughs because inspections are required before meat products can be sold in the United States, she said.
