Carbonated soft drinks sales plummet after imposition of sugar tax

CSD sales fell by 38% in the US city of Philadelphia after it imposed a tax on sugar-laden drinks but rose outside the city limits.

The tax imposed in 2017 helps generate funds for pre-kindergarten and improvements to city parks and libraries. Beverage sales within the city's limits dropped 51%, but an increase in sales just outside Philadelphia's borders resulted in a net drop of 38%, according to the findings published on May 13 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
