US cranberry crop may be deliberately cut by a quarter

US cranberry farmers have asked the federal government for permission to destroy 25% of their crop, in another attempt to cure the over-supply.

This request would remove about 100 million pounds (45,359 tonnes) of fruit from the market but will not, however, reduce the US cranberry stocks just yet. The over-supply increased from 4.6 mln barrels in 2011 to 9.9 mln in 2016 and is now projected to reach 10.9 mln barrels in the upcoming harvest.
