Rail Service Boost for Fertilizer

Last week ended a special six-week reporting period for fertilizer cargoes, imposed by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) on two major freight railroads, after farmers, chemical shippers and a group of farm-state senators complained to the carriers and to STB regulators that backed-up railcar shipments from winter disruptions threatened to prevent crop growers from getting those nutrients in time for spring plantings and early field treatments. Railroads obtained more locomotives and hired more train crews as they pushed to alleviate the situation.
