Trade between the US and Brazil should start in 90 days, says MAPA

The Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) has announced that beef trade between the United States and Brazil should start in the next 90 days after completion of administrative procedures by the health authorities from both countries.

The agreement, which was decided in Washington last week, is important to Brazil not only for the US market but also because the US is a reference for other importers of fresh beef.

Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi says the agreement is about more than trade. "This is recognition of food safety in Brazil," he says.

Negotiations between the two countries started in 1999, in the second term for Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
