Exchange rate helps Brazil export maize to the US
A ship chartered by multinational Bunge left the port of Itacoatiara, in the north of Brazil, on Monday, October 26, with 54,000 tons of maize for the United States.
This is unusual, as the US is the largest producer and exporter of maize and is in full harvest. The US will harvest 344 million tons this year, compared with 85.45 million tons produced in Brazil.
But Brazilian maize is about US$ 13 cheaper at the port because of the collapse off the Brazilian real.
Williams agency data show that two shipments were made from Brazil to the US, of 50,000 and 29,000 tons of maize, in August and September.
In 2014, the US imported just 1,900 tons of maize from Brazil, according to government data.
