Plan to wipe out FMD in South America by 2020
A technical framework to eradicate foot and mouth disease in South America was approved last week in Mato Grosso, Brazil's largest producer of beef, by delegates of the South American Commission for the Fight against FMD (COSALFA).
The framework lists technical and epidemiological standards and methodologies, and defines the strategies to be implemented by South American countries for the disease to be eradicated by 2020. The last step will be an ending to vaccination. It includes FMD risk assessment in the zones that are free of FMD with vaccination, descriptions of production systems, zoning for sanitary status transitions, and risk management establishing how vulnerable the area is to the reintroduction of the virus in zones that are now free of it.
