Soybeans: 50% losses threaten yields in Mato Grosso do Sul
The first few weeks of the harvest in Mato Grosso do Sul have seen an unexpected variation in yields for soybeans. Farmers forecasts are being reduced by up to 17% compared with the estimates at planting, or 4% compared with the 2013/14 season.
In São Gabriel do Oeste (Center-North), farmer Ari Silveira - who has harvested 46 of a total of 800 hectares - estimates losses of 50% (from 60 to 30 bags per hectare) in 38% of the crops. In Naviraí (South), Alexandre Pallharini says yields of 20 bags per hectare in some areas will bring down his average productivity from 60 to 54 bags per hectare.
