Losses of US hogs now number about 8 million
Losses of hogs on US farms to Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus have reached about eight million head now, after reaching seven million by February, an economist with a leading group in the pork industry has told Reuters.
There is still no official record of deaths to PEDv, which first appeared in the US in April 2013 and has since spread to 30 states.
The government says it will make a report on PEDv, and cases must be officially registered. Despite the millions of dollars spent on research, it is not known how the virus entered the country, and there is no reliable vaccine.
