Multinational bets on FMD vaccine production in Brazil
While beef producing states such as Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo seek to free themselves of FMD vaccination, there are those who are betting on production of the drug that protects animals from the disease. Merial, a multinational in the field of animal health in 150 countries, is building a vaccine plant in São Paulo state to increase its production capacity in the country by between 20% and 30%, says CEO, Jorge Espanha.
In an interview with Gazeta do Povo, Espanha said that the new unit is part of the company's strategy to expand its market share in Brazil in FMD vaccine, which is currently 18%, as well as abroad.
The announcement of the investment comes a few weeks after Brazil began its FMD vaccination campaign.
