Chicken and pig slaughter up in Q2, says IBGE
In the second quarter of 2013, 1.4 billion head of chicken and 8.9 million pigs were slaughtered in Brazil, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in its quarterly survey. The figures show an increase of 13.2% for chicken and 1.6% for pigs on the same period in 2012.
This amounted to 3.2 million tons of poultry, 10.9% up on the previous quarter and 10.6% up on the second quarter of 2012. Compared with the same quarter in 2012, the market share account for by the South increased from 57.8% to 61.5%.Paraná increased slaughter by 10.3%, and is still the main poultry meat producing state in Brazil.
The Southeast region of Brazil was the second-largest producer, but its share fell from 22.8% to 19.6%.
Pig slaughter was up by 0.7% on the first three months of 2013.The South accounted for 64.8% of pug slaughter in Brazil in the second quarter.
