A system that helps to supplement the supply of cattle during the off season - which runs from May to November i Brazil - feedlots will be emptier this year, says the National Feedlot Association (Assocon). It says the number of beef cattle in feedlots in Brazil will fall by 9% in 2013, to around 3.3 million head.
The figure was based on the intention of Assocon members, who account for about 20% - or about 570,000 head - of the country's feedlot cattle. Earlier this year, Assocon said Brazil would finish 4% more cattle in feedlots compared with 2012's almost 3.5 million head.
