Maranhão considered free of FMD
Maranhão has been nationally recognized as FMD-free with vaccination. The Normative Instruction was signed by Agriculture Minister (MAPA), Antônio Andrade. According to the state Department of Agriculture, this recognition means cattle farmers may trade with 25 Brazilian states. A request for international recognition of the state's status will be sent in October to the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
"In May 2014 Maranhão is expected to be classified internationally, along with the states of Pará, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Paraíba, which form a group that is part of the expansion program of the FMD-free zone, coordinated by MAPA," said the Department.
