Suspension of contracts with BRF causes losses to turkey farmers in Minas Gerais
Brasil Foods, in Uberlândia, has suspended its contracts with turkey farmers. About 80 were farmers have been cut from the partnership and are complaining about the wasted investments they have made. At least 17 farmers have filed a lawsuit seeking damages.
Most turkey farms of Monte Carmelo, Minas Gerais, are closing after the decision by Brasil Foods. The deputy mayor of the municipality of 50,000 people, João Batista Chaves Filho, has calculated the loss of revenue and social problems that will be caused.
"We will lose US$ 50 million a year in state and federal taxes. We are very worried because it will not have an impact now but in 2015, and the rural population will move to the city. We cannot take on these people. It is irreparable damage," he said.
