Russia authorizes chilled beef from Uruguay
Russia has authorized Uruguay to export chilled beef, says the Uruguayan Ambassador in Russia. Although he received the news on July 1, the official statement by the Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control in Russia (Rosseljoznadzor) has to be sent to Uruguay's Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).
The news has been welcomed cautiously by the industry. The general manager of the slaughterhouse Tacuarembó / Marfrig, Marcelo Secco, said that while it is good, there official announcement has to be made, and it remains to be seen if the deal will be attractive if it materializes.
Uruguay had a license to sell chilled beef to Russia, but with a limit of only 15 days from production to trade, it was impossible to get into the market. This period has now been extended in principle to between 90 and 120 days, which would allow transport by sea and trading within the period stipulated.
