ABIEC testing electronic seal to boost Halal meat exports

In early June, the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (ABIEC) held a seminar in Brasilia to discuss the opportunities in Halal meat. The event was attended by more than 20 Ambassadors to Brazil from Muslim countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The event involved a presentation of an electronic seal, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA), the Institute of Software Technology, CEITEC, and the University of São Paulo (USP).

The seal, which increases product safety, is now being tested for use in exports of Halal meat. After earning US$ 1.5 billion in 2012 from beef exports to Muslim countries, produced according to the principles of Islam, Brazil aims to increase sales by up to 10% this year. With approximately 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, the Halal meat market has great potential for growth, given that in the last ten years it has grown by 447% in revenue and 76% in volume, says the president of ABIEC, Antônio Jorge Camardelli.
