Trade barriers are the big challenge to food exports

The big challenge facing food exports to Asian countries is still overcoming non-tariff trade barriers, say Brazilian business people in the sector. The meat sector has seen the recently-opened market in China close, with an isolated case last year of BSE, for example.
Even with these barriers, however, beef exports to Asia have increased by 122%, mainly to Hong Kong, and chicken has increased by 2%, according to the Foreign Trade Study Foundation (Funcex).
"At two of the largest exporters in the region, protectionism has kept us off the market," says the managing director of the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters, Fernando Sampaio, who accuses the South Koreans and Japanese of using barriers not included in international standards because of BSE cases in Brazil.
