CNA criticizes fines for slaughterhouses
On Friday, April 19, the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock Farming (CNA) released a statement criticizing the fines levied against slaughterhouses by federal prosecutors. The fines levied against 26 slaughterhouses total R$ 556.9 million. The CNA says the federal prosecutor (MPF) has in the last four years proposed Adjustment of Conduct Terms (TAC) for slaughterhouses which impose obligations without any legal foundation.
"In practice, the MPF has taken on a role about the Courts. It has imposed a restrictive penalty on producers restricting their rights because of a simple investigation, or convictions in the first instance, in which the Courts have not yet made a final judgment," says the statement. According to calculations by the CNA, the fines levied against the 26 slaughterhouses are the equivalent of R$ 50 per kilo of meat processed.
