Beef traced in retail

Pão de Açúcar supermarket announced on Thursday, April 4, the extension of its source guarantee program for all the beef sold in its stores nationwide. Consumer can now identify the origin of the product - the name of the farm where the animal was raised, its location, and which slaughterhouses it reached the supermarket from.

This is an important step toward transparency and traceability, especially in times of heightened attention being paid to the source of food following the recent scandal involving horse meat in Europe. The program is based on tracking, quality inspection, microbiological analysis, residue analysis, and external audits. Also incorporated for the first time is analysis of meat tenderness, in an attempt to standardize quality in different batches.

Besides giving more information to the customers, extending the program helps retailers and their supply chains by bringing information from the slaughterhouses together on one platform, which helps identify problems quickly and minimize losses.
