With an eye on exports, Cobb-Vantress opens plant in Minas Gerais
Cobb-Vantress, one of the world’s leading poultry genetics companies, has taken another step to make Brazil into a major export platform. Last week the US multinational began producing chicken breeding stock at its newest farm, in the municipality of Itapagipe, in Minas Gerais.
Still only partially operational, the unit will be responsible for more than 4% of chicken breeding stock produced in the country this year. The farm in Itapagipe will be able to hold 3.5 million birds, 8% of the breeding stock produced every year in Brazil. In this first phase, the plant will be able to accommodate 1.8 million birds.
Cobb plans to complete the second and final phase of the unit by 2014. In all, it is investing about R$ 35 million.
To boost its exports, the company is betting on South America as a market for production from the new unit. Minas Gerais is certified to export to all the countries in South America and Europe.
