Russia threatens new ban on beef from Brazil over BSE
Previously absent from discussions about the atypical case of BSE in Paraná, Russia decided to put the issue on the agenda at a meeting with the Brazilian government on January 16, during Green Week in Germany. During the talks, the Russians reiterated criticism of the Brazilian government's delay in communicating the episode to its trade partners and it left open the possibility of imposing barriers on exports of Brazilian beef.
Since the Ministry of Agriculture announced in November the end of the Russian ban on meat from Mato Grosso, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, trade relations have not yet returned to normal. Besides the threat related to BSE, the ministry was informed yesterday that of the 20 establishments visited by Russian veterinarians in December and which have delivered the requested documentation, only one, in Rio Grande do Sul, has been authorized to export to Russia. The other 19 will have to provide more information.
