Egypt bans Paraná over non-classical BSE case
Egypt has banned beef from Paraná, adding to the list of countries that have done so because of the non-classic case of BSE confirmed in the state. Valor newspaper has discovered that the Egyptian authorities, who initially indicated they would not impose a ban, have verbally informed the Brazilian embassy in Cairo of this decision.
As Egypt is one of the largest buyers of Brazilian beef, spending US$ 493.4 million on 122,599 tons between January and November, this could have a ripple effect on the market. However, as the ban is restricted to Paraná, the commercial impact is negligible, since Egypt's imports from the state totaled only US$ 4.3 million (1,109 tons) in the period.
