Government opens offensive to explain BESE case and to avoid restrictions on Brazilian beef
To prevent other countries following the example set by Japan and deciding to suspend their purchases of Brazilian beef, the Agriculture Ministry will send at least 20 technical missions to consumer markets. The goal is to resolve any questions about the case in which the causative agent of BSE was found in an animal that dies in 2010 on a farm in Paraná.
According to Secretary of Farming Defense, Ênio Marques, the government also intends to hold bilateral meetings in Paris and Geneva in the coming weeks to put an end to the issue. It was the first time Brazil has recorded the presence of the disease's causative agent. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has decided, however, to maintain its classification of Brazil as having a negligible risk for BSE.
