Cattle disease down by 63% in Mato Grosso state

The diagnoses of rabies, brucellosis, tuberculosis and the threat of BSE in cattle in Mato Grosso have fallen by 63% in 2012. Monitoring by the Institute of Farming Defense (INDEA) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) has found 177 of these cases this year, compared with 480 in 2011.

The main reduction has been noted in the number of animals destroyed in order to prevent the spread of BSE. Last year 281 animals were destroyed, compared with 27 this year - a decrease of 90%.The fall in the number of animals destroyed is down to fewer farms using chicken litter in cattle feed, explains the coordinator of the BSE Prevention Program at MAPA in Mato Grosso, Donizeti Mesquita
