US pork production down by 2% in September

Pork production in the United States totaled 1.91 billion pounds in September 2012. This was 2% down on the same month in 2011, says the USDA. Slaughter totaled 9.45 million head, also 2% down on September last year.

The average live weight went up by a pound to 271 pounds. Production in 2012 so far is 3% up on last year. Red meat production and trade totaled 3.95 billion pounds in September this year, down by 6% on the same month in 2011. However, from January to September 2012, production rose slightly, to 36.6 billion pounds, according to the USDA.
