Record chicken and pig production costs in August
The Production Cost Indices (IPC) for broilers and pigs, drawn up by Embrapa Pigs and Poultry, rose in August to record highs of 183.70 and 183.09 points, respectively. The chicken production cost index was up by 12.73% in the month, and 37.17% in the year. For pigs, it rose by 10.61% last month, and 27.98% in the year.
"Once again the prices of inputs that make up animal feed were the main cause of the increase," said Embrapa Pigs and Poultry, in a statement. Chicken feed, which made up 74.35% of the index in August, rose by 12.42% last month, and is up by 31.60% in the year, pressured by rises in the price of corn and soybean meal.
