Agribusinesses in Santa Catarina eager to sell pork to Japan
Agribusinesses in the west of Santa Catarina state are hoping to sell 8,000 tons of pork a month to Japan as of 2013. On Monday, August 27, the Japanese Embassy announced an agreement with Brazil to market the product. Minister of Institutional Relations, Ideli Salvatti, says "We expect to be able to almost double our exports of pork from Santa Catarina."
Japan is the world's largest importer of pork, buying about 1.2 million tons a year. Sales still depend on trade relations between Japan and the agribusinesses, however. The Secretary of Agriculture in Santa Catarina, João Rodrigues, says, "We will have a Brazilian mission in Japan handling the matter, as well."
