Russia wants to increase beef production
The Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitri Medvedev, says the country must reduce its dependence on imported beef and invest to take on a major role in the international arena. He says in recent times the price of beef has increased by almost threefold, and that the country has the natural conditions to develop the beef industry and it should do so.
Experts agree that the Russian industry has a good opportunity to increase its cattle farming business.
This may reduce the demand for Brazilian products. Since May 2011, Russia has had an embargo on fresh pork and beef from Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Mato Grosso. Nevertheless, Russia remains the main export market for beef from Brazil.
