Minas Gerais pork exports break record in quarter
Minas Gerais earned US$ 24.7 million in the first quarter of 2012 from pork exports, up 218.3% on the same period in 2011, says Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC)’s data, analyzed by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa).
The average value of exported meat was a record, at US$ 2,700 a ton, up 11.1% on a year ago, reports the technical adviser, Marcia Aparecida de Paiva Silva, from the Office of Agricultural Economics and Policy (Spea) The volume shipped (9000 tons) was up by 186.4% on the first quarter in 2011.
Silva says pork exports from Minas Gerais out-performed Brazil overall. "Between the first quarter of 2011 and 2012, Brazilian pork exports were basically unchanged, up just 1.3%, so Minas Gerais’ share of Brazilian pork exports increased from 2.5% to 8.0%," she said.
