USA recommends a reduction in antibiotic use in animals

In its most severe recommendation so far, the USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that farmers need to reduce antibiotic use in pigs, cattle and poultry to prevent them from becoming ineffective against human infections.

Using antibiotics to increase meat production has become a common practice, but it leads to over-exposure of bacteria to the drugs and creates a greater risk of these microorganisms becoming resistant to drugs that are important in medicine, such as penicillin and tylosin.
