McDonald's "excludes" Brazil and promises 100% British chicken at the London Olympics
An official sponsor of the London Olympics, fast food chain McDonald's has announced it will sell meals made with exclusively British chicken in London. The measure was a requirement of UK producers, who have been protesting recently and have "excluded" other countries - including Brazil, the world’s largest poultry exporter – from the process.
According to The Telegraph newspaper, the restaurant chain is expected to sell more than 30,000 tons of chicken during the London Olympics. The British share of the market is usually small, as only 10% of the meat used is sourced from the UK. The rest comes from Eastern Europe (60%) and Brazil and Thailand (30%). In recent years, the National Farmers Union has called for McDonald's to use more British chicken, and the multinational has given in to its demands.
