Large fire hits JBS-Friboi in Pará
A major fire struck JBS-Friboi in Santana do Araguaia in Para on Thursday, March 15. Police reports said the fire started around 11:30 a.m. and had not been controlled by 2:30 p.m.
There is no fire department in the city and a truck from the city of Redenção, more than 180 km away, was sent at around 1:00 p.m. to fight the flames, said the police. The commercial manager of JBS-Friboi in Marabá, Ludhait Pereira, confirmed that the fire destroyed the unit in the early afternoon. The JBS press office said the unit was evacuated and no one was hurt.
There was a risk of the flames reaching a storehouse containing flammable material and causing an explosion, but by 2:30 p.m. it had not been hit by the fire.
Professor Wesley Vicuña Santos das Neves, who lives in Santana do Araguaia, was in the location and told G1 that at least 80% of the unit had already been destroyed and there is preliminary information that a short circuit in the electrical installation might have caused the fire.
