Doux Frangosul announces sale of pig business in Caxias do Sul
Mired in debt to its integrated breeders for three years, Doux Frangosul has announced it has agreed to sell its pig business in Caxias do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul state. The French multinational company’s director-general, Aristides Vogt, says it is also preparing to take on a new investor, in order to clear its debts to 1,600 integrated poultry farmers in the state.
According to the president of the Rio Grande do Sul Federation of Agricultural Workers (Fetag-RS), Elton Weber, Vogt – without naming names – said the sale of the pig business will be completed by the end of this month, and will be similar the sale of Doux’s former turkey business, also in Caxias do Sul, to Marfrig in 2009. Valor newspaper has learned that Marfrig has been negotiating and is a strong candidate to take over the pigs business and its relationships with 700 integrated farmers in the state. Marfrig has denied this.
