Slaughterhouses in Rio Grande do Sul suffering cattle shortages

Slaughterhouses in Rio Grande do Sul are struggling to find cattle, because of the poor quality of pastureland. "February to April is usually a period of growth for the pastures, when cattle farmers sell off their cattle," says Pedro Marques, from the Center for Studies in Beef Cattle Production and Supply Chain Systems (Nespro).

The president of the Rio Grande do Sul Meat Industry Association (Sicadergs), Ronei Lauxen, says farmers have been losing money. One of the consequences is the high price of cattle. There is, then, a possibility that slaughterhouses in the state will buy in from cheaper regions, such as the Center-West.
