Maranhão, Pará, Pernambuco and Piauí may become FMD-free areas
The states of Maranhão, Pará, Pernambuco and Piauí may this year be recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture as free of FMD with vaccination. This will happen if they meet the requirements of the project that aims to expand the area that is recognized as free of the disease in the country.
These states are today recognized as having a medium risk for the disease and therefore can only sell meat to regions with the same sanitary classification. That is to say they cannot export or sell meat to the South, Southeast and Center-West regions of Brazil, which are free of the disease with vaccination. In Brazil only the state of Santa Catarina is free of FMD without vaccination, and has been since 2007.
