Meat exports total US$ 15 billion
Brazil earned a record of US$ 15 billion in meat exports last year, despite barriers to Brazilian products, especially by Russia, and the crisis in developed countries, which led to a loss of consumers' purchasing power.
The adverse conditions did not spare the country from a decline in volumes of beef and pork exported, but the strong demand in emerging countries kept prices rising and ensured a rise in export revenue across all proteins.
Once again the biggest export revenue earner was chicken, in which Brazil is a leader in exports. The export volume rose to 3.9 million tons, up 3% on 2010, while revenues increased to US$ 8.25 billion, up by 21%. Beef exports earned US$ 5.3 billion last year, despite a 10% drop in export volume. The pork industry also saw gains in revenue terms, earning US$ 1.43 billion in 2011, but the volume exported fell by 4%, according to the Ministry of Development.
