BRAZIL will be the first country in the world to produce sustainable sugar cane, certified by the new Bonsucro quality seal, it has been announced. The first Bonsucro certified product, which guarantees that sugar and ethanol has been produced legally, respecting biodiversity, the environment and human rights, has been given to the Raizen plant in the city of Maracaí in the state of São Paulo. The plant, built this year through a joint venture between Shell and Cosan, will produce more than 4 million tonnes of sugar every year. Coca-Cola is said to be the first buyer of the certified sugar. "This will change the sugar cane industry permanently," Kevin Ogorzalek from Bonsucro said.
