This article was originally published in Foodnews

Brazil's state-run agricultural research company, Embrapa, will present a new prototype of cashew nut processing equipment at the Frutal 2009 conference in Fortaleza, in mid-September. The new machine with blades used for opening cashew fruit, dubbed DAS-2C, was developed by industrial equipment manufacturer Empresa Gil Equipamentos Industriais and Embrapa Agroind£stria Tropical. The project was financed by federal development bank Banco do Nordeste. DAS-2C has a processing capacity of 60 cashew nuts a minute by using a system of 'intelligent blades' to open cashew fruit endocarp, minimising the risk of damage to the nut. The equipment could be on sale by end of 2009.
