Cashew plants re-opened

This article was originally published in Foodnews

THE rising price of cashew nuts has spurred Tanzania to re-open some closed processing plants. Speaking to the media recently, the eastern zone manager of the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania said the price of raw cashew nuts (RCN) in the 2006/07 season had been TZS600/ kg (US$0.53/kg) for grade one and TZS480/kg for grade two. "In a move to enhance production of the crop, the board has embarked on the rehabilitation of cashew factories which were formerly privatised and encourages the establishment of more small processing units, " he said. Tanzania has been exporting RCN for some time, due to a lack of processing plants in the country.
