THE Canadian Wheat Board is urging its government to ratify a trade deal made last year with Colombia, before 400,000 tonnes of wheat and 40,000 tonnes of malting barley exports worth C$135m (US$125m) per year are jeopardised. Colombia's new 15% tariff on wheat imports because of a fall in global prices puts Canadian farmers at a C$40 per tonne competitive disadvantage to Argentina, which has duty-free access, while the US is also close to a free trade deal.
