ON July 12, ethanol pioneer Raphael "Ray" Katzen passed away at the age of 93. While working at a defence plant under federal government contract during World War II, Dr Katzen saw the potential for cellulosic ethanol technologies. In 1955, he founded Raphael Katzen Associates International, a US-based technology company with projects all across the globe. Dr Katzen sold the company - now Katzen International - in 1997 and set up a consultancy in Florida.
