UK wheat output was up 33% at 17.6m tonnes versus last year, according to new National Farmers' Union estimates, due to higher yields and a 13% rise in planted area to 2.1m hectares - far better than expected after a washout summer. The spring barley crop rose by more than a quarter to 3.5m tonnes due to an 18% jump in plantings, while winter barley output was up by more than a fifth at 2.8m tonnes.
