SPANISH sheep milk production grew 3% in 2008, compared with 2007 figures, producing 427 million litres, according to statistics from the Ministry of the Environment. The biggest producers are Castilla y León with 265 million litres (+1%) and Castilla-La Mancha with 121 million litres (+7%). However, the biggest increase in sheep milk production was seen in Cataluña and Aragón. The Aragonese region produced 3.7 million litres, compared with 2.4 million litres in 2007 (+35%), while Cataluña produced 109 000 litres (+32%). Meanwhile, Cantabria and Asturias regions saw the smallest production levels at 8 500 litres, both witnessing a drop of 1 000 litres.
