EU intervention extendedThis article was originally published in Foodnews
THE European Commission (EC) has extended the intervention period (FOODNEWS 24 July) for butter and skimmed milk powder (SMP), as part of its attempts to stabilise dairy prices for the benefit of EU farmers. The intervention buying limit is usually 30 000 tonnes of butter and 109 000 tonnes of SMP and is open each year between 1 March and 31 August. However, the EC has already well exceeded these limits, having bought 83 000 tonnes of butter and 283 000 tonnes of SMP. The EC has now extended the period until the end of February 2010, when a new period will begin.
