DEMAND for Californian walnuts in the Middle East and Pacific Rim continued to increase rapidly throughout May, according to the latest shipment figures released by the California Walnut Board. Year-to-date figures to 31 May show that Hong Kong bought 13.63 million lbs of in-shell walnuts, up from 695 320lbs in the 2007/08 season. China bought 11.24 million lbs of in-shell nuts, compared with just 132 090lbs in the previous season. Turkey was the top buyer of US in-shell walnuts with 30.54 million lbs, up from 14.49 million lbs last year. In the shelled market, the biggest increase was from South Korea, with 12.12 million lbs compared with 8.71 million lbs the previous year.
