Calvo cuts foreign jobs

This article was originally published in Foodnews

SPANISH fish processor, Calvo, is to reduce its production and cut 300 jobs in El Salvador. This was announced by the company's operation manager, Miguel Angel Peñavita Arigita, to local press. The production cut forecast is a consequence of a two months' fishing ban, coupled with the sluggish economic situation. "This will be the longest ban of the last few years," said Arigita. "Also, foreign ships mainly supply fish to Ecuador and it is more difficult to get raw material in El Salvador." Grupo Calvo has had a processing plant in El Salvador since 2003. It has a processing capacity of 65 000 tonnes and employs 1 500 staff.
