PERU's Austral Group is finalising the construction of a cannery and frozen facility complex in Pisco, scheduled to be completed by July. The US$17 million project should produce 20 000 cartons of canned seafood daily and process up to 250 tonnes of frozen mackerels. Austral also plans to set up a new company, Conservera Las Americas, to develop the canned tuna business. Austral Group, part of Norwegian company Austevoll Seafood, is one of Peru's largest seafood processors, with over 30 vessels and 11 plants, producing fishmeal, fish oil and both canned and frozen seafood products.
