THE value of Iran's pistachio exports stood at US$721 million in the last Iranian calendar year (ending 20 March 2009), a 43% fall compared with the year before. Iranian pistachios were exported to 68 countries, with Hong Kong, the UAE, Germany and Russia as the major customers importing 56% of the product, according to the Mehr News Agency. In the calendar year ending March 2008, Iran's pistachio exports were valued at some US$1.3 billion and were exported to 79 countries. The figure also shows a 48% drop in terms of weight, reaching 104 850 tonnes in the last year from the previous amount of 202 820 tonnes. Iran is the world's largest producer and exporter of pistachio nuts.
