ONTARIO's tomato industry is to pay between US$94.77-98.82/(short) ton (the higher level includes a premium), for fruit, a strong increase from last season. This sudden jump is also due to the exchange rate, according to the Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers. The Canadian dollar has strengthened against the US dollar between 2008-09. "The result was a significant one-year price increase here in Ontario rather than a measured two-year increase like that which occurred in California, " reports the association's newsletter.
