Shortage of raw material

This article was originally published in Foodnews

VIETNAMESE shrimp exports fell by 1.7% in value to US$144.5 million in the first quarter of this year. Global demand for shrimp products has grown, but processors in Vietnam have insufficient raw material, as farmers lost money from raising shrimp for export last year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The total shrimp farming area nationwide in the first quarter of this year declined 8% over the same period of last year. Ca Mau province saw a decrease of 264 500ha of shrimp farming area, 125 000ha in southern Bac Lieu province and 45 000ha in southern Kien Giang province. The lack of material forced 14 out of 26 shrimp processors in Ca Mau province to temporarily halt production.
